Webinar On Internet of Medical Things (IoMT): A Future Connected Healthcare System


IEEE Student Branch (AUST), IEEE Sensor Council, NSW Section Chapter (Australia), and the Department of EEE (AUST), are jointly going to organize a webinar on zoom platform. Keynote speaker of the webinar is Prof. Dr. Subhas Mukhopadhyay (Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia). Prof. Dr. Muhammad Fazli Ilahi, Honourable Vice-Chancellor of AUST will grace the webinar as the Chief Guest. Prof. Dr. A. K. M. Baki, Head of the Department of EEE (AUST), will moderate the webinar.

Abstract

IoMT stands for the Internet of Medical Things and it’s a combination of medical devices and applications that can connect all the healthcare information technology systems through networking technologies. It’s a very big market that was reported to have a worth of 22.5 billion USD in 2016 and it’s expected to become a USD 142.45 billion by 2026.

Medical devices can collect, analyze and send data across the web using this technology. It can connect both, digital such as heart monitor and non-digital devices like patient beds to the internet. IoMT will transform the future of the healthcare industry by providing the world with smart digital solutions at the ease of comfort of the consumers.

An increase in world population along with a significant aging portion is forcing rapid rises in healthcare costs. The healthcare system is going through a transformation in which continuous monitoring of inhabitants is possible even without hospitalization. The advancement of sensing technologies, embedded systems, wireless communication technologies, nano-technologies, and miniaturization makes it possible to develop smart medical systems to monitor activities of human beings continuously. Wearable sensors monitor physiological parameters continuously along with detect other symptoms such as any abnormal and/or unforeseen situations which need immediate attention. Therefore, necessary help can be provided in times of dire need. The seminar will review the latest reported systems and the trends on wearable and medical devices to monitor activities of humans and issues to be addressed to tackle the challenges.

 

A short biography of Subhas Mukhopadhyay

Biography: Prof. Dr. Subhas holds a B.E.E. (gold medallist), M.E.E., Ph.D. (India) and Doctor of Engineering (Japan). He has over 31 years of teaching, industrial and research experience.

Currently he is working as a Professor of Mechanical/Electronics Engineering, Macquarie University, Australia and is the Discipline Leader of the Mechatronics Engineering Degree Programme. His fields of interest include Smart Sensors and sensing technology, instrumentation techniques, wireless sensors and network (WSN), Internet of Things (IoT), Mechatronics, Robotics, Health monitoring etc. He has supervised over 40 postgraduate students and over 100 Honours students.

He has published over 400 papers in different international journals and conference proceedings, written ten books and fifty two book chapters and edited eighteen conference proceedings. He has also edited thirty five books with Springer-Verlag and thirty two journal special issues. He has organized over 20 international conferences as either General Chairs/co-chairs or Technical Programme Chair. He has delivered 376 presentations including keynote, invited, tutorial and special lectures.

He is a Fellow of IEEE (USA), a Fellow of IET (UK), a Fellow of IETE (India). He is a Topical Editor of IEEE Sensors journal. He is also associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurements and IEEE Transactions on Review of Biomedical Engineering. He is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Sensors Council from 2017 to 2022. He is the Founding chair of the IEEE Sensors Council NSW chapter.
