Technical Tallk on "Solar Photovoltaic Energy to Replace Nuclear Energy for Electricity Generation - Myth or Reality?" by Professor Nowshad Amin

Needless to say, energy in its purest form like electricity is vital for any developing country's growth like Bangladesh. Solar cells have come across various generations after being demonstrated first at Bell Labs with significant conversion efficiency of 6% in 1954 to today's multi mega watt-peak solar farms with the utmost achievable conversion efficiencies (over 25%) for electrical power generation. It is not exaggerated to say we have replaced over 300 Nuclear Power Plants with over 375 GW of cumulative Solar Photovoltaic energy harvesting plants by November 2017 around the globe.

On December 27, 2017, Department of EEE, Ahsanullah University of Science & Technology in association with IEEE Power & Energy Society Bangladesh Chapter and AUST EEE Society arranged a technical talk on the advancements of solar PV industry and its capability to replace nuclear power plants. The title of the Talk was "Solar Photovoltaic Energy to Replace Nuclear Energy for Electricity Generation - Myth or Reality?" and it was presented by Professor Dr. Nowshad Amin. Professor Amin is currently serving as a Professor at the Dept. of Electrical, Electronic & Systems Engineering, The National University of Malaysia, where he also leads the Solar Photovoltaic Research Group under the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI).

In his talk, Professor Amin explained how solar PV has come across with successful commercialization till to date. The speaker also highlighted the ways to meet the goals set in COP21 commitment by 200 countries. Why solar PV can easily be a choice of electricity over nuclear plants in a country like Bangladesh was also discussed to boost the hope for alternatives in the coming era of energy crisis. The talk was followed by an interactive question-answer session.

At the end of the session, Professor Dr. Satyen Biswas, Head, Dept. of EEE presented a token of appreciation to the speaker. Faculties from various departments of AUST, guests from other universities and a large number of students were present in the seminar.
